The Fair Labor Standards Act mandates a minimum salary that certain exempt employees must earn, if they are to be exempt from overtime requirements.
In the 1H of 2016, the U.S. Department of Labor finalized a rule change that significantly increased the minimum salary requirement for exempt employees. In late 2016 a Federal court injunction effectively put the new rules on hold. It is widely anticipated that the Trump Administration will not defend the rules in litigation, and will seek to reverse them through the normal rulemaking process.
Bottom line: the old minimum salary requirement for exempt employees remains at $23,660 per year as of this writing.
